FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is ear microsuction?

Ear microsuction is a safe and gentle method of removing earwax using a small suction device under direct vision. It’s considered the gold standard of earwax removal and is suitable for most people, including those with perforated eardrums or previous ear surgery.

Is it painful?

No, it’s not painful. You might hear some suction sounds or feel a slight tickling or pressure sensation, but it shouldn’t hurt. If you feel discomfort at any point, the procedure will be paused immediately.

How long does an appointment take?

Most appointments last around 30-45 minutes, including a short ear health check and aftercare advice.

What if there’s no wax?

If no wax is found after your ear check, a £20 consultation fee applies to cover the time and examination. You can check with your GP/practice nurse if wax present in ear/s prior to your appointment with us.

What areas do you cover?

Home visits are available within 30 minutes of Inverurie at no extra cost. For locations further away, a small travel fee (£10 – £15) may apply – this is confirmed before your visit.

What’s the difference between microsuction and irrigation?

Microsuction removes wax using a gentle vacuum under vision, while irrigation uses warm water to flush wax out. Microsuction is generally safer, cleaner, and preferred for people with ear or skin conditions.

Do I need to use drops before my appointment?

Yes, we recommend using olive oil or Earol spray for 3-5 days before your appointment to soften wax. This helps make the procedure quicker and more comfortable.

Can you treat children?

No, currently we do not see patients under 18 years old.

Can I book if I have hearing aids or grommets?

Yes, microsuction is safe if you have hearing aids, grommets, or a perforated eardrum.

How often should I have earwax removed?

Most people benefit from a check every 6-12 months, or sooner if they’re prone to wax build-up or wear hearing aids.

How do I pay?

Payment can be made by card or cash at your appointment. You’ll receive a receipt for your records.

What’s your cancellation policy?

We understand that sometimes life gets in the way. However, we ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellation or rescheduling where possible. Short-notice cancellations may incur a £20 fee.

Are you NHS-trained?

Yes – Ear Haven is run by an NHS-trained registered nurse, fully insured and experienced in ear care and microsuction.

Can I book a clinic appointment instead of a home visit?

At present, we offer mobile home visits only.

What happens after the treatment?

You’ll receive aftercare advice and can contact us if you experience any discomfort or have concerns. Most people notice immediate improvement in hearing after wax removal.

What if wax removal is unsuccessful or partially successful?

In rare cases, earwax may be too hard or impacted to remove fully during your first visit – this is often due to not softening the wax with ear drops beforehand. If this happens, you’ll be advised to use drops for a few more days and return for a follow-up appointment at a reduced rate. Follow-up appointments within 2 weeks are charged at a discounted rate of £40.
